Olawa Gibson is a native New Yorker, hailing from El Barrio, also known as Spanish Harlem. Her roots trace back to African American ancestry, with her family migrating from the Carolinas and Georgia to settle in New York City.
During her time at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Olawa discovered her passion for dancing at the relatively late age of 19. She was fortunate to study at the pre-professional programs of the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey following her graduation from the university. Although she initially explored musical theater, Olawa made the decision to start a family and pursue a career in education.
Despite her transition, Olawa's love for the arts remains strong. She currently holds a Master's degree in Education, is certified to be a principal for the NYC Department of Education, and is enrolled in a Doctoral program for Community Based Leadership. Alongside her educational pursuits, Olawa continues to nurture her passion for singing and music production. Her multifaceted journey reflects her dedication to both academia and the arts.
